A large crowd gathers in front of the Grand Palais to admire a statue of the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Blake combines illustrations of people from all walks of life and parts of the world to form this mass of admirers. ‘Magic Crowds’ are a recurring theme in Blake’s work (most famously seen in Sgt. Pepper) and reflect not only Blake’s sense of fun and interest in the surreal possibilities of collage, but his own sociability and fascination with the diversity of human experience.
