A stunning counterpart to 'Death at the Parade', 'Hope In Hell' is perhaps more overtly political. With veiled references to the conflict in Iraq: Iraqi money, tanks, British and American flags, a palm tree, skulls and skeletons symbolising death and futility, this piece could easily have crossed the line into polemicism or outright negativity. However, Baldwin makes figures of children central to his composition, obliging the viewer consider the effects of war o those who are powerless, but also a message of redemption and hope for the future. This message is reinforced by the presence of birds; a key motif in Baldwin’s works that is representative of freedom and liberation. The packed composition and bold palette give a feeling of spontaneity that underlies the skilful balance of elements and colours that Baldwin has painstakingly created.
