'The Golden Valleys, Gloucestershire’ – A signed limited edition hand-painted lithograph and silkscreen by Lucy Farley. Printed at Coriander Studio, published by CCA Galleries.
‘The Golden Valleys, Gloucestershire’ is a classic English landscape as uniquely interpreted by Lucy Farley. With the barest suggestion she implies rain, wind and sun in a changeable sky against a backdrop of grass, valley and hills. The overwhelming impression is that of movement; Farley strikes black charcoal-like markings in sweeping diagonals and curves across the image. On close examination a huge amount of texture and graphic detail is visible, from the crayon-esque strokes in purple and blue to the drip-effect of the orange; but step away and one is struck only by the atmosphere of the place.
“This piece was inspired by a walk along the canal in Chalford Valley. Early spring meant there were strong contrasts in colours, and fields cut across the landscape making me aware of space and depth and distortion of forms. I was inspired by the British post-war painter Prunella Clough, who continuously experimented with texture and surface to create varying illusions of depth. My experiments in printmaking are primarily concerned with the combination of marks and materials to create a new surface and illusion. Prunella Clough described how 'printmaking had enriched her desire (as a painter) to investigate the relationship between surface and depth'. The sculptural qualities of stone lithography, which is how this was work was made, add to this continuous investigation for me. The limestone has to be ground by hand before the drawing can be made. The lithographs of John Piper and Graham Sutherland have been a huge influence- flat layers of colour used to build up 3D effects and the 'dirtied' colour of their palettes.” – Lucy Farley
