'St Michael's Mount' - A signed, limited edition silkscreen print with glazes by Donald Hamilton Fraser. Printed at Coriander Studio, published by CCA Galleries.
Fraser's last pieces for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - 'St. Michael's Mount' and 'Kinlochbervie, Red Sky' - display all the aspects of his landscape work that have brought him such acclaim. Though both are depictions of traditional subject matter, Fraser imbues them with an emotional intensity that is beyond their superficial beauty. Both works also display Fraser's mastery of colour, which led the French to hail him as 'the colouristic heir to Turner' after a show in Paris in 1956. In 'Kinlochbervie, Red Sky' Fraser grapples with the competing demands of battling alpha colours; the bold reds, pinks, yellows and oranges that should by rights overwhelm the composition, are somehow not only held in check, but combined to create a rich and dramatic harmony.
