'Kelham Hall' - A signed limited edition silkscreen print by architectural artist John Piper.Levinson 278.
From the portfolio of eight screenprints 'Victorian Dream Palaces' 'Kelham Hall, beside the Trent outside Newark, was built as a private housew after a fire had destroyed its predecessor in 1857. It was commissioned by the Manners-Sutton family from George Gilbert Scott. The red brick with sandstone dressings, the hard Gothic mouldings, the clock tower with spire above- a close relation to that at St. Pancras- are all Scott signature tunes. 'The amazing silhouette', as Mark Girouard says, 'enriches the view for miles around'. The house had its own gas works, which also supplied the village. It became a Theological College early in this century, and is now the headquarters of the Nottinghamshire County Council.'
