MARIA RIVANS
Maria Rivans’ Namaka stars Hollywood actress Linda Darnell, re-imagined through the artist’s distinctive collage style as an icon of
oceanic beauty, wanderlust and feminine mythology. Named after the
Polynesian goddess of water, the work draws inspiration from the British
seaside and the emotional pull of the sea itself - both serene and
powerful.
Surrounded by pearls, dolphins, lighthouses and shimmering marine
imagery, Darnell becomes the center of a dreamlike composition where
vintage glamour meets coastal fantasy. Throughout the work, recurring
symbols carry deeper emotional resonance: pearls symbolize wisdom and
transformation, dolphins act as mythological guides between worlds, and
the lighthouse stands as a symbol of navigation and hope.
At once playful and contemplative, Namaka reflects Rivans’
fascination with escapism, storytelling and emotional symbolism. The
work invites the viewer into a world of nostalgia, imagination and
wonder, where the sea becomes both setting and metaphor.
