‘Atlantic Red’ and ‘L'ecluse, Ile de Ré’ were originally sketched by the artist from the same point on the French island of Ile de Ré, and are part of a series based on the historic 'L'ecluses' (stone wall fishing traps) visible at low tide. The ecluse fills with water at high tide and the sea recedes with the falling tide, leaving the fish trapped.

The artist explores her fascination for these old, once-functioning structures in her work. Once used by the islanders as a source of food, their purpose now is to act as a reminder of a way of life dating back to the 14th century. The crescent shape of the 'dry walling technique' is a reoccurring motif in Farley’s work.

Coinciding with the artist’s own experience of sudden changes and departures, Farley works with this subject matter as a metaphor for tidal shifts that happen in life; the idea of exploring and sifting through what remains and using those remnants to open up the next stage which, like nature, inevitably comes around with its own force.
