As a wrestling fan since childhood, Blake began depicting his first series of wrestlers in 1961 using publicity shots from sports magazines and gave each an invented heroic personal history. His interest has continued throughout his career, and as a result they feature as a common theme in his broad portfolio of work. In his Wrestlers series, each fictitious character was taken from works created for Blake's exhibition 'Portraits and People' in Autumn 2015.

I was once asked what I would do if I hadn't been a painter, and after deep thought I decided I would have been a professional wrestler.
