‘Inishkeas’ - A signed, limited edition silkscreen print by
Scottish abstract artist Barbara Rae CBE RA. Printed at Coriander Studio, published by CCA Galleries.

‘Inishkeas’ is from a series of four silkscreen prints (also
including ‘Moy Bank’, ‘Falmore’ and ‘Moy Traveller’) ideally sized to be hung
together. In a smaller format than her many other editions, each work displays
Rae’s gift as a colourist, as does the harmony and balance she creates between
the four pieces. This colour-balance across the series seems to echo the
landscapes from which she has taken inspiration: the sun-drenched purples and
ochres of Spain and South America, contrasted with the muted petrol blues and
greys of her native Scotland.

Though each piece varies in palette and content,
they are linked as a group by the horizontal gradation central to their
composition. These washes of horizontal colour exemplify Rae’s interest in
building layers and creating different textures. This effect is enhanced by the
application of metallic ink highlighting certain areas and creating a sensation
of the depth of the layers beneath. Each
composition contains examples of printed text, pattern, or a ‘scraped’ effect
all lending to the tactility of the surface.
Rae continues the leaping salmon motif first seen in her recent editions
‘Fish Pool’ and ‘Ballinskelligs’.
